Rope access
Rope access needs very little ground space and can reach most parts of a façade. It is quick to set up and take down, which can make it suitable for targeted repairs. It is limited to trained personnel and is generally well suited to short-duration tasks where the work area is specific.
MEWPs (cherry pickers and platforms)
A MEWP gives a stable platform at height and can be a good choice for medium-rise buildings with clear ground access. It can carry tools and materials easily. Limitations include reach, ground conditions, space to position the machine, wind and other weather restrictions.
Scaffolding
Scaffolding provides a fixed working platform over a large area. It is often the better option for major resealing projects and long-duration work. It takes longer to erect, needs more space and can cause more disruption to the building and surrounding area.
How we choose the access method
There is no single right option for every building. We assess the height, duration, extent of work, ground access, ground conditions, available space, exclusion areas, building geometry, weather, equipment and material needs, rescue arrangements, disruption and the findings of a site-specific risk assessment. The Work at Height Regulations 2005 require access to be planned and appropriate for the task.

Is rope access cheaper than scaffolding?
It can be for small, high-level repairs, but not always. The total cost depends on the job size, access complexity and time on site.
